The 2016 Annual Conference

Nearly 300 of the UK’s top radiation safety scientists gathered in Llandudno last week for the SRP Annual Conference. The theme of this year's event was practical radiation protection in the workplace. Delegates heard presentations ranging from prior risk assessment to the challenges of wearing protective clothing and those of nuclear decommissioning. Medical physics experts discussed safety issues for staff and patients involved with radiation therapy or diagnostic imaging. Invited speakers gave talks on the radiation safety culture in France and China. A large trade exhibition was held alongside with nearly 40 stands representing suppliers and businesses involved in radiation protection.

Delegates also enjoyed a full social programme, including a visit to Conwy Castle.  The SRP's public outreach work was covered by sessions dealing with the teaching of radiation and radioactivity in schools, particularly by the University of Liverpool. And, most importantly for Llandudno, on Monday 25th April, the day prior to the conference, SRP members brought their interactive stage show ‘Radiation Clicks - the Science of Radiation Protection’ to Year 10 and 11 students at Ysgol John Bright.

Photos from the event can be viewed on SRP's Facebook page here.

And the Pet Treasure Hunt Winner - Liam Vormawah. This new competition needs a little explanation..... In order to encourage delegates to visit all the exhibition stands each exhibitor was given a photo of an SRP member's pet with an SRP 'something' in the shot.  We had an absolutely brilliant response to our request for pictures - so good that we have plans to use these photos again - more news in the next few weeks.
