This will provide an overview of the submarine dismantling program and describe the radioactive waste and health physics challenges encountered and still to be faced. The talk could be useful for anyone involved in the radioactive waste management or radiation protection aspects of decommissioning.
Maureen is a Chartered Radiation Safety Professional and currently the Head of Radioactive Waste Management and Health Physics at Babcock International as part of the Submarine Decommissioning Programme at the Rosyth Royal Dockyard in Scotland. Maureen graduated from Strathclyde University with a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Health and trained in the UK nuclear industry as a health physicist, becoming a Radiation Protection Adviser in 1991 (I think ?). Maureen has worked in the area of health physics and radioactive waste management in the UK, Canada and the USA over the course of the last 35 years, and has also worked internationally performing radiation protection and waste management assessments, radiation protection training and writing publications on radiation protection and decommissioning.
