ONR is the competent authority in relation to the transport of radioactive material by road, rail and inland waterway. This webinar provided a high level overview of ONR’s role, current legislation and guidance, dutyholder responsibilities, things to consider before transporting, radiation risk assessment, radiation emergency planning, as well as Radiation Protection Adviser / Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser role.

Paul Butler
Paul has been in the nuclear industry for the past 10 years, prior to ONR he was a nuclear graduate with secondments in Magnox, Sellafield and Nuvia. Since 2014 Paul has worked at ONR where he has worked on an array of projects such as delicensing of Nuclear Licensed Sites, Periodic Safety Review of nuclear facilities, Direct Shine assessment, IRR17 compliance inspections as well as Generic Design Assessment for the UK ABWR and UK HPR1000. Paul is currently a Nuclear Safety Inspector in Radiological Protection working within the Transport Competent Authority.
Nicola Jaynes
Nicola is a Nuclear Safety Inspector with the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). She joined ONR in 2017 becoming the lead inspector for Land Use Planning within the Emergency Preparedness and Response Team and the radiation protection lead inspector for Transport. In April 2021 Nicola moved on from Land Use Planning and is now the radiation protection lead inspector for Transport and also for Defence Propulsion. Before joining ONR she worked (for far too many years to mention) at the URENCO site at Capenhurst as RP Manager and latterly in an independent assurance role. She is a member of the SRP Non-Nuclear Industries Committee and a Fellow of SRP.
Chris Jones
Chris is a Nuclear Safety Inspector with the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). He joined ONR in 2013 initially inspecting in the Defence division and New Build projects. He is now based in the Transport Competent Authority covering a wide range of topics including package approvals, inspection and international work. He is also the UK’s representative to the IAEA Transport Safety Standards Committee. Before joining ONR he worked as a qualification specialist in the defence industry dealing with explosives, aircraft and weapon systems.
