SRP held a one-day meeting dedicated to radiation safety aspects of artificial optical and electromagnetic fields. The meeting explored regulatory perspectives, provided examples of safe working practice, discussed direct and indirect radiation effects and highlighted issues surrounding workers at particular risk. Radiation sources considered during the day included air traffic control radar, magnetic particle inspection devices, clinical lasers, UV transilluminators, transcranial magnetic stimulators and mobile communication towers. Karen Fuller from HSE was among the speakers, providing useful insight into the work of the regulator. A theme emerging from the day was the need to establish an effective radiation safety culture across all relevant work areas. The day was augmented by a practical demonstration of measurement equipment and a recorded interview with a consultant ophthalmic surgeon describing some laser induced eye injuries.
