Get Girls into Physics Event

SRP President Pete Cole (University of Liverpool) and SRP members Maria Murray (Society & College of Radiographers), Jess Revill (Rolls-Royce), Stephanie Slater (Independent RPA & RWA) and Thomas Suter (Babcock International) volunteered at the recent Get Girls into Physics event which took place at Vale of Leven Academy on 12th February 2016.

Over 240 female pupils from 9 schools across Glasgow attended the event and took part in a series of workshops on various aspects of physics.

SRP showcased successful female professionals in SRP and showed the potential careers in Radiation Protection.  SRP also did a workshop on ‘Our Radioactive World’ which included a brief lecture and a demo of radioactivity in household items.

Jess Revill, Rolls-Royce, said: “I feel that the Get Girls into Physics event was a great success and a brilliant way to recognise the International Women in STEM Day. I think the girls enjoyed both the practical demonstration (“Which item is most radioactive?”) with Pete and Thomas and the careers talk from myself, Maria and Steph. A good proportion of the girls said they were interested in physics too so that was very encouraging. We tried to emphasise that physics isn’t just for boys and how exciting and rewarding a career in physics can be, so hopefully we will have inspired these young ladies to consider a career in radiation protection!”

Physics Teacher from Vale of Leven Academy, Rebecca Chrystie, said:  “We had some excellent feedback from the pupils. The teachers found the workshops gave them lots of extra talking points particularly when it came to careers advice and future job opportunities.   The students thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the event.”

The day closed with a Q&A session, where students quizzed the workshop contributors.
