Presidential Message on UK RPE/MPE Recognition Options

With the implementation date of the BSSD into UK law fast approaching, in March 2016, HSE, DoH and four environment agencies of the UK (the Radiation Regulators) invited the President and Immediate Past President of SRP to a meeting in Whitehall to discuss with them the options for recognition of RPEs and MPEs in the UK. The outcome of that meeting was a request to SRP from the Radiation Regulators to prepare an options appraisal. SRP agreed to do this at its March Council meeting, endorsing the President’s recommendation that this be done in conjunction with IPEM and AURPO. A draft options paper was prepared by SRP and sent to IPEM and AURPO in April. A revised paper was prepared following feedback from IPEM and AURPO and sent to the Radiation Regulators in June.  In July the regulators responded with the preference for a UK Radiation Protection Council to maintain a register of RP professionals which would include the recognition of RPAs, RWAs and MPEs. A meeting between the Radiation Regulators, SRP, IPEM and AURPO is proposed by the Radiation Regulators for late September to develop details. Before this, we must have clear objectives and a strategy on how we would like this work to develop.  This is a great opportunity for SRP to shape the way the UK recognises its RP experts and to use our chartered status for the advancement of the profession. We will provide updates when the notable happenings occur.  It is proposed that a new working group is established (the Professional Accreditation Working Group) to initially draw up an implementation plan for the RPE/MPE recognition options recently chosen by the Radiation Regulators. As a first step this plan will be presented at the aforementioned meeting of the Radiation Regulators, IPEM, and AURPO in late September.
