Funding Arrangements for the UK's New Nuclear Safeguards Regime

Nuclear safeguards are reporting and verification processes by which states demonstrate to the international community that civil nuclear material is not diverted into military or weapons programmes.  As part of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), arrangements have been put in place to establish a domestic nuclear safeguards regime to be run by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). The regime will commence at the end of the transition period. In November 2018, as part of the government response to the Nuclear Safeguards Regulations Consultation, Government committed to providing clarity on the future funding arrangements for the regime beyond December 2020.  The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has confirmed that the Government will continue to fund the new domestic nuclear safeguards regime until the end of March 2022. This goes beyond the commitment to fund the costs of setting up of the regime to the end of the transition period in December 2020. Further information on proposals for the longer-term funding of the regime beyond March 2022 will be made available in due course.  For further information contact cnrdeuratomcp@beis.gov.uk
