Richard Wakeford is awarded the OBE

We are delighted to announce that Professor Richard Wakeford has been awarded the OBE in the King's Birthday Honours List for 'services to the advancement of the science of radiation protection'.

Richard is a member of various committees, including the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation and the International Commission on Radiological Protection, Committee 1.  He was a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies following the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan, and for 25 years was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Radiological Protection.

After completing his PhD in high energy physics at the University of Liverpool he joined British Nuclear Fuels Limited where he workded for nearly 30 years before taking early retirement in 2006.  While employed by BNFL he became interested in the risk to health from exposure to radiation, and this subject became his field of expertise, so that on leaving BNFL he became Professor in Epidemiology at the University of Manchester, until retiring in 2019.  Richard is now an Honorary Professor at the University.

"I was very surprised, but obviously delighted, to be awarded this honour.  I have tried to use my expertise built up over many years into my retirement, through continued involvement in studies and membership of national and international expert committees.  I hope that the award raises the profile of the important field of radiological protection."
