Martin Ansell: "My hobbies? Carpentry and gardening (I'm a qualified carpenter)."
Grade: MSRP
Interview Date: February 2021
Who do you work for?

GE Healthcare.

Please describe your work in general and what you are currently working on

My role is Operational Radiation Protection Adviser, and I'm involved in decommissioning of plant and buildings at the Grove Centre.

I'm a key member of the RPA team helping to ensure compliance with the IRR99s, EPR11 and site License Conditions. The team delivers a radiation protection service and operational safety advice to departments. I provide operational RPA through direct support, advice (including on the spot advice) and guidance to operators for tasks with the potential for higher risk for employees and contractors. This risk is determined via Permits to Work, Breaches of Containment, Method Statements and Written System of Work.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

That there is a different challenge each day.

Can you recommend any information resources that have been useful for you in your work?

Information and publications from SRP, ICRP, HSE and ONR.

Describe SRP in three adjectives

Educational, informative, engaging.

What has been the most memorable, or useful, SRP event you have attended?

A one day Practical ALARP workshop in Birmingham, in 2017.

Where do you live?

Chesham, Buckinghamshire.

Who do you live with?

My wife Ann.

Do you have pets?

Yes, a 6-year-old Border Collie called Isla. She has one blue eye and one brown one.

Isla - showing off her distinctive eyes.
What’s the best advice you’ve received?

When I was approved as an RPA, the advice was to take your time, read everything you are being asked to advise on and check twice that the advice is correct.

What’s your favourite meal?

Beef Stifado.

What would be your Desert Island Disc?

A Matter of Trust – Billy Joel.

What’s the most exciting or interesting thing you have ever done?

Visiting Hong Kong in 1984, before it was returned to China. The flight into Hong Kong airport will stay with me forever; flying between the buildings, seeing people's washing so close that you felt you could touch it. Two things that struck me about the place were how clean the streets were, and that the underground trains were computer-operated, clean and modern. The most memorable experience, though, was standing on the quayside watching the QE2 coming into Hong Kong Island harbour and then docking.

What book would you recommend taking on holiday?

Something light-hearted.

What are your hobbies?

Carpentry and gardening. I look after the lawn and Ann does the flowers and vegetables. My father was a landscape gardener but I have inherited none of his way with plants...I only have to look at a plant and it starts to die...

Combining his hobbies – a wooden piece Martin made for the garden.
What’s your favourite smell?

Creosote.

Do you have any unusual skills or talents?

I'm a qualified carpenter.  I started in 1974, qualified in 1977, and worked for a non-standard joinery company, making bespoke staircases, fire doors, kitchen worktops and cabinets.

What would be your superpower?

To remove all other road users when I'm on the road! With easy and clear roads, you could get where you want to go on time.

How has coronavirus affected your work?

I'm one of the lucky ones as I've had work all the time during all the lockdowns, though I'm now working from home.  My role is operational and we are a decommissioning site, so it's given us more time to put together documents for planned projects.

I think we have all found ways to cope with the isolation, now we don't see colleagues and friends daily. I've been able to change my routine, walking Isla with Ann for an hour in the afternoon, and then adding the hour on at the end of day – it's about moving things around.

Isla, the first time she saw snow.
Is there a particular charity you support?

Ann has diabetes, so we support Diabetes UK.

What would be your dream holiday, assuming unlimited money and a month off?

Visiting Cyprus. We've holidayed on the island for over 25 years, and enjoy the relaxed culture, friendly people and the weather, however the best thing is their good healthy food. Plus we've made a lot of friends over the years, who we stay in touch with.

The view from the hotel where Martin and Ann stayed on their last visit to Cyprus.
What would be your perfect day?

We'd be in Cyprus of course. We would start the day with a walk along the seafront in Limassol and then relax on the beach for couple hours.  After a nice lunch, we'd visit a place of interest (in the shade), with time for some more relaxation before dinner.
