New Publication from UNEP
News Story from 19th Sep 2016
The United Nations Environment Programme has recently published a leaflet 'Radiation Effects and Sources'. Aimed at the general public it has three main sections: What is radiation, What does radiaton do to us and Where does radiaton come from. Achim Steiner, UNEP Executive Director and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations says: 'While the scientific community has published information on radiation sources and effects, it has tended to be technical and perhaps difficult for the general public to understand—which has often confused, rather than informed, the public, meaning that the fear and confusion engendered decades ago prevails. This publication tackles the issue by detailing the most up-to-date scientific information from UNSCEAR—on the types of radiation, their sources and effects on humans and the environment—and making it accessible to the general reader.' UNSCEAR is the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation, established by the General Assembly in 1955.
The leaflet is available as a free download and teaching resource.
