Inside the Core - November
November Reflections: A Month of Connections, Challenges, and Change
As November draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on what has been another whirlwind month filled with travel, technology, and poignant moments. It’s been a month of connection—with family, friends, and colleagues—while also juggling the inevitable chaos that comes with my life and living between two countries.
November saw me traveling to Manchester, a city that always feels like coming home. The primary purpose of my trip was twofold: to visit family and friends, as well as to tackle an essential (but daunting) task in the office—migrating my laptop after the amentum takeover of Jacobs (yes…another name change!). While reuniting with loved ones brought warmth, the technology side of things was less straightforward. Hours were spent wrestling with updates, configurations, and software glitches, testing both patience and persistence!
Thankfully, IT woe and Manchester’s poor weather couldn’t drown its charm and lots of good food and music with friends was had, as well as a coffee festival at the weekend providing some respite. Meeting friends over delicious aromatic brews and artisan sweet treats was the perfect way to recharge and remind myself of the simple joys of connection and conversation. We were also much more sensible than previous years where we’d left feeling “drunk” on the caffeine! This year alternating decaf and full caff brews like proper grown-ups ;)
One of the most emotional moments of my time back in the UK was attending the funeral of a beloved friend and colleague, Professor Pete Cole, a true pioneer of the Society’s outreach programme from when he was President. His dedication to forming the outreach programme and inspiring the next generation was unparalleled, and his legacy will undoubtedly live on for many years to come. It was a bittersweet gathering, bringing together colleagues and friends to celebrate a life well-lived while grappling with the terrible loss of an absolute giant of the Society and radiation protection community.
Returning to Spain after the chilly, wet, Manchester weather was a welcome contrast, even if I did bring back an awful cold with me! November temperatures reaching 19°C this past weekend felt almost surreal—a gentle reminder of why I love calling this place home. Despite being full of cold I managed to head out to try a new nearby local restaurant that grows all its own vegetables and olives. It’s amazing how sunshine can lift the spirits and bring clarity after a period of emotional and physical busyness.
This month also marked a significant lifestyle upgrade: the installation of a walking pad and standing desk in my home office. I’d ordered it months ago but it’s been far too hot to want to build anything, and this weekend was the perfect opportunity. Without wanting to sound like an advertisement for them, the benefits genuinely have been transformative! Incorporating movement into my workday has not only improved my physical health but also boosted my focus and energy levels. Standing for calls or gently walking during tasks makes long hours at the desk feel less draining. It’s a reminder that small changes can make a big difference in how we approach both work and wellness.
November has been a month of reflection and renewal. The challenges—whether technical, emotional, or logistical—have been balanced by moments of joy, connection, and growth. As we head into December, I’m carrying forward the lessons of this month: to cherish connections, embrace change, and find balance in all aspects of life.
Here’s to the closing chapters of 2024 and all the possibilities they bring.
